Day 1"For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, 0 God, strengthen my hands". (Neh. 6:9)
Scripture Reading: Nehemiah 6
Nehemiah had returned to Jerusalem to lead in rebuilding the city walls destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar. Not everyone was happy with what Nehemiah was attempting to do and they therefore sought to do mischief (Neh. 6:2). The people of Jerusalem of course were very weak (in military strength) and were fearful (vs. 6-13). Nehemiah had much faith and he stood strong in the face of trickery and adversity (6:11-13). Nehemiah did not take lightly the threat as he realized the danger and so he prays, “0 God strengthen my hands." He realized that the enemy was strong and the Jewish people had no help, so the only place to turn was to their God.
Has not this been true through the ages? The believer's foe is very strong, and seeks to make us afraid, but we have the Almighty God, the Creator, the Captain of our salvation to turn to."... Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world" (I Jn. 4:4). As we seek to serve our Lord, and build his church, our foes will be great, and there is much that can cause us fear, but our Lord is ever present to help. "Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield" (Ps. 33:20). "Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth" (Ps. 124:8). Hebrews 13:6 tells us, "So that we may boldly say, the Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me."
As we listen to the news and see that there is much going on in America which is directly against what we hold to be true and right, may we cry out to our God, "strengthen our hands to the work, the time is short." Our government is trying through the passage of laws, to muzzle the truth of God's word, may we pray, "O God strengthen us, let us not be afraid of their threatenings." The early church, in the midst of persecution prayed, "And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word" (Acts 4:29). Persecution should embolden us, not defeat us.
Satan and this wicked world, has always sought to hinder God's work, and we should not be surprised when it happens, "... The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you, if they kept my saying, they will keep yours also" (Jn. 15:20). "Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf' (I Pet. 4:16). "But and if ye suffer for righteousness sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled" (I Pet. 3:14). And remember, Paul said: "for I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us" (Rom. 8:18). Lord strengthen us for the work.
